For most of my adult life, I've searched for a community in which to express my identity as a Jew in a manner consistent with my beliefs.  I'm strongly identified but, as a non-believer, I have long felt profoundly uncomfortable with the God-centered ritual and practice of traditional congregations, even liberal Reform ones.  Shir Shalom has given me a space to participate fully in a congregation which celebrates Jewish history, culture, ethics and values, all without the theistic ritual which is so intellectually dishonest for me.  And as a bonus, it's filled with really interesting, caring and alive people.

For a long time I had not been affiliated with a Jewish organization and missed it very much. Joining a synagogue was not the answer for me. One day I read about a new humanistic group forming in the Delaware Valley area. It intrigued me! Maybe here was a place to satisfy my need for Jewish holiday celebrations, education, and social activities. As this new community evolves, I know I'm where I belong. There is room for me and my beliefs. Our very full calendar of events & activities provides an opportunity to learn, grow and socialize at a variety of venues. It feels good to be part of such a supportive, caring group of wonderful people who are so bright, always seeking, and willing to give. Thank you, Shir Shalom.

After accepting my non-belief in the God of the Orthodox, Conservative, Reconstructionist, or Reform movements, I left the Conservative movement in which I'd lived my life. I thought that no one--especially other Jews--shared my particular beliefs. But when I found out about Humanistic Judaism I learned that there are thousands of other Jews around the country and the world who think as I do. I could not find a congregation in which I, a Jew who does not believe in God, could be comfortable. Now I have one: Shir Shalom, a community of Humanistic Jews in the Delaware Valley.

We came together. Humanistic Jews looking for a place to celebrate our Jewish heritage and to dialogue with like minded people. Strangers one minute...a community soon thereafter. Seekers finding a home, a place of comfort and challenge where we could connect with our Jewish past and link to our Jewish future. Some of us were concerned about education for ourselves, our children and their children; some looked for ceremonies consistent with their humanistic beliefs; still others wished to be a part of a community that provided cultural and social events supporting the beliefs and commitments of humanistic Judaism. We are co-creating a community to meet all of our needs and the needs of future members. As we evolve, so does our sense of belonging and integrity. We invite you to become part of Shir Shalom...A Community for Humanistic Judaism. You'll be glad you did!
